Warehouses and logistics sites often combine several different risk environments under one roof. Office IT may sit alongside cleaning equipment, chargers, portable tools and equipment that is frequently moved across operational areas.

Why does warehouse equipment need a risk-based approach?

Equipment used in a warehouse may be exposed to movement, dust, impact and repeated handling. HSE guidance says equipment used in harsher environments should generally be inspected more frequently than equipment that is less likely to become damaged.

What equipment might be included?

  • Office computers and printers
  • Portable chargers and power supplies
  • Cleaning equipment
  • Extension leads
  • Portable tools used by maintenance teams
  • Staff kitchen and welfare appliances
  • Other portable or movable electrical equipment

Is all warehouse equipment high risk?

No. A desktop computer in a site office may be relatively low risk, while equipment moved around the warehouse floor may need closer attention. The maintenance programme should reflect those differences.

How can testing be scheduled?

Large sites can be divided by zone, department or shift. This can help minimise downtime and make it easier to maintain clear records by operational area.

What can previous failures tell you?

Recurring faults can be useful evidence. If the same type of equipment repeatedly fails or becomes damaged, inspection intervals may need shortening or the equipment itself may need reviewing.

See our manufacturing and warehouse PAT testing service page.

What about fixed electrical systems?

PAT testing does not replace inspection and maintenance of fixed wiring or installed electrical systems. Those systems require their own maintenance arrangements and competent inspection/testing.

Official HSE guidance

HSE explains that equipment in harsher environments may require more frequent checks in its guidance on work using electrically powered equipment.
