Schools can contain hundreds or thousands of electrical items spread across classrooms, offices, kitchens, IT suites, workshops and communal spaces. The challenge for site managers is not simply to “PAT test everything every year”, but to build a sensible maintenance programme around the actual equipment and environment.

What equipment should schools consider?

  • Desktop computers, monitors and printers
  • Laptops, chargers and docking equipment
  • Projectors and classroom AV equipment
  • Kettles, microwaves and staff-room appliances
  • Cleaning equipment
  • Extension leads and portable power equipment
  • Workshop and technology equipment where applicable

Does every item need annual testing?

No. HSE recommends a risk-based approach. Stationary IT equipment in a low-risk environment may justify less frequent formal inspection or testing than equipment that is handheld, frequently moved or exposed to tougher conditions.

Why visual inspection matters

Many faults are visible before an electrical test is carried out. Damaged cables, cracked plugs, loose cable entries and damaged casings may be identified by user checks or formal visual inspection.

When is the best time to test a school?

Testing is often easiest during school holidays, inset days, evenings or other low-occupancy periods. Larger schools can also be tested by building, floor or department to keep disruption under control.

Should schools keep records?

Records can be useful even though PAT labels and records are not automatically required by law. A digital asset list can help site managers identify failed items, review recurring faults and plan future inspection intervals.

See our dedicated PAT testing for schools page for service information.

Managing equipment across departments

Schools can make testing easier by grouping assets by building or department. IT suites, kitchens, science rooms, offices, cleaning stores and technology areas can have different equipment and risk profiles, so a structured asset register helps site managers plan inspection without treating every item identically.

Official HSE guidance

HSE’s portable appliance testing FAQ explains that the frequency of inspection and testing depends on the equipment and the environment in which it is used.

Need testing across one or more schools?

National PAT Compliance can arrange phased or multi-site testing with clear digital reporting. Request a school PAT testing quote.
