Hotels and hospitality businesses can have electrical equipment spread across guest rooms, reception areas, offices, kitchens, housekeeping stores and staff spaces. A useful maintenance programme needs to reflect those different environments rather than treating every appliance the same.

What hotel equipment may be included?

  • Guest-room kettles, lamps, televisions and hairdryers
  • Reception and office equipment
  • Housekeeping equipment
  • Portable cleaning appliances
  • Staff-room appliances
  • Portable kitchen and catering equipment where suitable
  • Extension leads and portable power equipment

Does every hotel appliance need annual PAT testing?

No blanket annual rule applies to every appliance. HSE guidance requires equipment to be maintained safely, with the frequency of inspection and testing based on the equipment, environment and previous findings.

How can testing work around occupied rooms?

Hotels can phase testing by floor, room block or housekeeping schedule. This allows rooms to be tested as they become available and reduces disruption to guests.

What equipment may need closer attention?

Equipment that is frequently moved, handled by many people or used in tougher conditions may justify more frequent inspection than stationary equipment. Housekeeping appliances and extension leads, for example, can experience more wear than a fixed television.

Should hotels keep digital records?

Although PAT records are not automatically required by law, they can be very useful for hotels because they allow management teams to track equipment by room, floor or department and identify recurring faults.

See our PAT testing for hotels and hospitality page.

Can serviced accommodation be included?

Yes. Serviced apartments, aparthotels and multi-property hospitality portfolios can also be organised under a structured testing programme.

Official guidance

HSE’s general guidance on maintaining electrical equipment safely explains that intervals should be based on equipment, environment and previous results.
