PAT testing for gyms and leisure centres: common electrical equipment, higher-use environments, visual checks and risk-based testing.

What equipment should be considered?

Portable and movable electrical equipment should be managed according to its type, condition, use and environment. Common examples include computers, kitchen appliances, chargers, extension leads, cleaning equipment and other plug-in devices.

How often should PAT testing be carried out?

There is no single universal annual interval for every appliance. Inspection and testing should be proportionate to risk, considering equipment construction, movement, environment, frequency of use and previous results.

Visual inspections and records

Obvious damage such as split cables, damaged plugs, loose parts or signs of overheating should be acted on promptly. Clear asset and test records can help organisations manage faults and future maintenance.

Equipment in High-Use Leisure Environments

Leisure facilities can combine office equipment, cleaning machines, audio-visual equipment, vending appliances and portable electrical items used around activity areas. Equipment that is moved frequently or exposed to demanding conditions should receive appropriate attention within the maintenance programme.

Changing Rooms, Cleaning and Moisture

Environmental conditions matter when assessing electrical risk. Where equipment is used around moisture or intensive cleaning regimes, managers should make sure its location and use are appropriate and that visible damage is reported promptly.

Planning Around Members and Opening Hours

Testing can often be organised by area so that parts of a facility remain operational. Identifying busy periods, restricted areas and critical equipment before the visit helps minimise interruption.

Equipment used in demanding environments

Gyms and leisure facilities may contain televisions, audio equipment, cleaning machines, vending equipment, chargers, extension leads and portable fitness or rehabilitation devices. Sweat, cleaning, movement and heavy daily use can affect equipment differently from a typical office environment.

Testing without disrupting members

Visits can be planned around quieter periods, cleaning schedules or opening hours. Mapping equipment by area — reception, offices, studios, changing rooms and staff areas — helps ensure appliances are covered efficiently while keeping disruption to customers to a minimum.
