PAT testing for churches and places of worship: guidance for electrical equipment, kitchens, offices, audio systems and community facilities.

What equipment should be considered?

Portable and movable electrical equipment should be managed according to its type, condition, use and environment. Common examples include computers, kitchen appliances, chargers, extension leads, cleaning equipment and other plug-in devices.

How often should PAT testing be carried out?

There is no single universal annual interval for every appliance. Inspection and testing should be proportionate to risk, considering equipment construction, movement, environment, frequency of use and previous results.

Visual inspections and records

Obvious damage such as split cables, damaged plugs, loose parts or signs of overheating should be acted on promptly. Clear asset and test records can help organisations manage faults and future maintenance.

Electrical Equipment Used for Services and Events

Places of worship may use portable audio systems, projectors, extension leads and temporary equipment differently from week to week. Equipment used for community events can also be moved and stored frequently, increasing the value of regular visual checks.

Kitchens, Halls and Community Rooms

Many premises include kitchens, meeting rooms and halls used by outside groups. Organisations should understand which electrical equipment they provide and have a sensible process for reporting damaged plugs, leads or appliances.

Planning Testing Around Worship and Community Activities

Testing can be scheduled around services, events and room bookings. Preparing access to stored equipment and identifying any items that must remain operational can make the visit more efficient.

Audio, AV and community equipment

Places of worship often use microphones, amplifiers, projectors, portable speakers, extension leads and other equipment for services and community events. Items that are regularly moved, connected and stored can be more exposed to cable and plug damage, so routine visual checks are particularly useful.

Planning testing around services and events

Testing can be arranged around worship services, community groups, weddings, funerals and other events. Preparing a list of rooms and equipment in advance helps reduce disruption and makes it easier to include offices, kitchens, halls and storage areas.
